Choreography: Margarita Trikka

In dialogue with: Weak Works | The Architecture of Christos Papoulias and His Friends

A new choreographic approach to the work of Christos Papoulias

Undisturbed Cutting is a choreographic work on the force of the imperceptible. Drawing on the thought of Christos Papoulias, it approaches the body as a continuously shifting landscape in which every displacement leaves a trace and every trace constitutes a site of memory. Its title is taken from undisturbed concrete cutting, a technique that allows a section to be removed without compromising the coherence of the structure that remains. Here the notion operates as both an architectural and a choreographic metaphor.

In dialogue with Georges Perec and his notion of the infra-ordinary, the choreography turns towards the imperceptible alterations that precede the event, towards whatever remains absent, subterranean or unseen. Just as, in the work of Papoulias, the archive is treated not as evidence of the past but as active artistic material, so the bodies become fields in which traces, absences and fragments of experience compose new narratives.

Six performers, integral to the exhibition space, repeat with Sisyphean persistence the elementary act of passing from standing to lying down and back again, in pursuit of an unbroken motion without jolt, accent or cut. The search for this impossible continuity generates deviations and errors, and it is these that become the true bearers of human presence.

The bodies become moving stratigraphies, living archives. Memories, gestures and everyday traces surface and vanish before they can settle into narrative, composing an archive of the imperceptible — one in which endurance is not resistance to change but the body’s capacity to hold its coherence while being continuously transformed.
