STAGES OF RESISTANCE

The B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation, in collaboration with Mavili Theatre.

One Month. One Stage: Every week in March brings a distinct theatrical experience at the newly established Mavili Theatre and at the amphitheater of the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation.

Maxim Gorki Theater – Royal Court Theatre – DPOH Slovakia – La MaMa New York

Three international productions in Athens.

The Stages of Resistance program presents works that treat the stage as a space of testimony. Performances based on real experiences, where personal narratives become carriers of history, politics, and collective memory.

Their creators approach the theatrical act as a place where identity, violence, exile, and justice are not presented as abstract concepts, but as lived experiences of the body and the voice.

In a world overloaded with images and narratives, these performances return to the essence of live presence: one person on stage speaking—and an audience invited to listen.

Agamemnon: The Circle of Blood

13*, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28 March – 3, 4 April 2026
Mavili Theatre (10–12 Dorylaion St., Mavili Square)

8 performances: Fridays at 21:00 & Saturdays at 19:30

A production of the historic La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club (New York) with Rafika Chawishe.

The performance returns to Athens after its sold-out run at the Acropol Theatre, giving audiences another opportunity to see it before the start of its European tour.

Drawing from Aeschylus’ Oresteia, the work is transformed into a contemporary, explosive human thriller. A woman on stage demands justice within the landscape of modern war, where the cycle of violence and revenge remains unbroken.

*After the performance on Friday, March 13, a discussion (Q&A) with the audience will follow, featuring Dr. Sozita Goudouna, founder and artistic director of the cultural organization Greece in USA in New York and a collaborator on the production that was presented at the historic La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. She will speak about the international trajectory of the production and its conceptual and artistic references.

Dr. Goudouna is a professor, exhibition curator, and author based in New York. In 2015, she was selected by RoseLee Goldberg as the first Andrew W. Mellon Curator at the Performa Biennial, and she has also worked at the Onassis Foundation USA in New York. In 2022, she was honored with the British Council’s Alumni Award for Culture and Creativity for her contribution to the promotion of contemporary art and cultural exchange. She has taught art and theatre history at universities such as CUNY, NYU, and The New School.

Tickets: €15
