In this concert, the ADAM Quartet explores the combination of music and poetry. Through music by Barry Guy and Franz Joseph Haydn, and poetry by Samuel Beckett and the scripture that inspired Haydn’s work, the ADAM Quartet attempts to embody verbal and non verbal experiences through music.

Barry Guy’s quartet “What’s the word” is based on the similarly titled poem by Samuel Beckett. It was the last poem he wrote before his death in 1989, and it is a repetitive search for something unnamable, constantly returning back to the notion of folly. Is folly the continued search, the loss of words or is it the beautiful state of pure humanity that is searching for something that cannot be found? The concert will end with Haydn’s quartet “The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross”, based on the scriptures that describe Jesus’ final moments.

ADAM Quartet

With fresh eyes, the ADAM Quartet is looking for ways to shine its own light on the string quartet while staying true to the essence of the genre.

The ADAM Quartet is part of the Netherlands String Quartet Academy (NSKA), where it has been following the full-time two-year postgraduate course since 2022. In 2023, the quartet was selected to be part of the Music Cultural Heritage Talent Platform (MERITA) and in 2024 they will Artist in Residence are during the Zeister Music Days.

Full of guts and enthusiasm, ADAM debuted on major Dutch stages and festivals, including The Concertgebouw, Tivoli Vredenburg, String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam, Grachtenfestival, Stift Festival, Klassifest, Down the Rabbit Hole, Schiermonnikoog Festival and the Storioni Festival. In 2021, the quartet received the String Quartet Stipendium from the Kersjes Fund. The ADAM Quartet received master classes from members of Quatuor Danel, Quatuor Ébène, Ysaÿe Quartet, Quartetto di Cremona and the Jerusalem Quartet, among others.

The ADAM Quartet’s contemporary perspective has already led to many interesting collaborations and crossover programmes where they enjoy exploring other musical styles and disciplines. In addition to the traditional repertoire, the quartet enjoys premiering music by contemporary composers.

MERITA

MERITA, where chamber Music, cultural hERItage and TAlent meet, is a platform for musicians, mentors, historical houses, and concert organizers, who work together in order to re-invigorate the tradition of classical music performance in Europe.

The project’s development lasts 3 years and involves 38 string quartets of a total of 152 artists. Through the digital platform, MERITA showcases artists and also presents cultural sites, historic houses, educational materials, content for the public and online and on-site activities, i.e. training, artistic residencies, transnational and international circulation of young artists, studies and research. The platform also aims at bringing new audiences closer to classical music and places of historical interest. It aspires to becoming a reference point for chamber musicians and practitioners, forming the basis for a new and lasting business model.
