SONIC CHROMAS | Nabelóse

  • 15.12.26

Nabelóse is a duo that inhabits the spaces between worlds – between the Alps and the Aegean, between composition and improvisation, between ancient song and an utterly contemporary sound.

Formed in 2016 during an artistic residency in Tyrol, Austria, the project brings together Greek-Austrian horn player Elena Margarita Kakaliagou and Vienna-based pianist, composer and curator Ingrid Schmoliner – two of the most distinctive voices in European experimental music.

Their music draws inspiration from Alpine and Greek folk traditions, transforming these deeply rooted influences through extended techniques on piano, horn and voice into something entirely their own: intimate yet boundless, shaped by memory, landscape and the experience of dwelling between places and times.

Schmoliner has received awards from the City of Vienna and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts and Culture, and is co-founder of New Adits, a long-running festival in Carinthia.

Kakaliagou, born in Volos and educated in Graz and Helsinki, performs internationally with ensembles such as zeitkratzer and Zinc & Copper, appearing at festivals from Tokyo to New York.

Together, their three albums trace a journey from their debut, NABELÓSE (2017), through OMOKENTRO (2023), to their recently released HAAR (Trost Records, 2026). Each album ventures further into poetic and melodic territory while remaining committed to a rich exploration of texture.

The voice, always part of their musical arsenal, has never been so insistently central.

To hear Nabelóse in Athens is to bring a particular circle to completion. Elena Kakaliagou’s musical imagination was shaped by the same Aegean light and folk memory that permeate this city – and the duo honours these roots not through nostalgia, but through transformation.
