Open Studios: Monthly, October 2026 – June 2027
The B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music and the Goethe-Institut Athen, in collaboration with the Volksbühne Berlin, launch a new international residency programme of artistic research and exchange between Athens and Berlin for the 2026–27 theatre season.
The programme brings together three emerging theatre-makers based in Greece — Helen Ambia Nzanga, Ioannis Morlai Kamara and Brikena Gishto — whose practices span directing, writing, dramaturgy and performance. Over the course of the season, and with antifascism at its core, the three artists will develop a new artistic concept, with a view to presenting their research as a lecture performance in the summer of 2027 within the framework of the international programme Antifascism: Now.
Ongoing artistic guidance is provided by Sahar Rahimi, director and co-Artistic Director of the Brechtfestival Augsburg, and Rafika Chawishe, actor and director and Lead Curator of Theatre Programming at the Foundation.
As part of the exchange, the programme invites theatre artists from Athens and Berlin to engage directly with the participants and to contribute to the development of their research. In Athens, the director and dramaturg Dimitris Babilis joins the programme as guest mentor. In January 2027 the three artists will travel to Berlin, where, through the collaboration with the Volksbühne, they will take part in an artistic exchange with Anta Helena Recke and Daniel Wetzel (Rimini Protokoll). Matthias Lilienthal and his collaborators will also contribute to the wider exchange, further connecting the participants with the contemporary European theatre landscape.
From October 2026 to June 2027, the evolving research will be shared through monthly Open Studios at the Foundation. Curated by the artists themselves, these sessions offer an opportunity to introduce their practices and work in progress to audiences, opening the creative process to public dialogue.
