Building Performance Practices – International Composition Seminar

On October 26, àktapha inaugurates the first session of the 3rd Building Performance Practices, a seminar that brings together eight composers from around the world each year. A creative experiment spanning 14 days in total, the seminar opens its doors to the public with a concert featuring four works created during its previous editions.

This year’s Building Performance Practices cycle will conclude in March 2027 at the Theocharakis Foundation, with a concert presenting eight new works to be created in collaboration with the àktapha ensemble and guest composition professor Stelios Dimou.

The four works featured in the October concert have been selected from the first two editions of Building Performance Practices.

naòs by Matteo Rigotti is a work of pure form inspired by architecture, using the ensemble’s sonic mass and the fragile articulation of solo writing as its principal tools.

In Lachesism, Luo Mengyong creates a theatrical work in which musical instruments, performers’ bodies and everyday objects become equal protagonists in a distinctive ritual.

Mater Tremenda by Giannis Angelakis, a work for ensemble and electronics, bears traces of an indelible religious tradition. Fragments of Handel’s Salve Regina emerge in distorted form, like blurred memories of a ritual that now survives only through sound.

In his work acts as facts, Zisis Seglias leaves form and material open to negotiation, through a continuous feedback loop between the composer, the performers and the audience.
