  -  Νέα   -  Karl H. van Zoggel on the Maria Callas exhibition in Athens

“On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of Maria Callas’ death on 16 September in Paris, I am delighted that the B&M Theoharakis Foundation in Athens is to host this exhibition. It presents, for the first time, the unique and rare collection of hundreds of items that come from Maria Callas herself, or else are linked to her in some way. The exhibits are collected over many years with great care, sincerity and expertise by our long-time member, Nicos Haralabopoulos. This collection is without doubt the biggest in the world and contains a wide range of objects including clothing, jewellery, documents, a piano, etc).

The exhibition will take place from 10 May to 30 September 2017 in the beautiful building that houses the B&M Theoharakis Foundation in the centre of Athens. I congratulate the Foundation on their initiative and organisational skills, and I hope that the exhibition will be a great success and that many admirers of the great diva from all over the world will see it. I am sure that this exhibition will Callas back to life, and that it will remind us that her tragedy was that, as an artist, she was immensely successful, but in her personal life she was unhappy – like so many of the operatic heroines that she portrayed so magnificently.

Maria Callas was famous in the world of opera throughout her lifetime, and remains an iconic figure to this day. After many years of hard work and struggle, she was able to use her voice with fiery intensity and she could sing almost every female operatic role, be it dramatic, comic or veristic, although she excelled in bel canto operas. She loved a challenge, many forgotten or unknown operas came back on the stage during her lifetime.

Forty years after her death, Callas’ name is still familiar to people who love opera, and to those who appreciate a fascinating and dramatic life story.”
